Book Details
Yertle the Turtle is a 1958 classic children's tale written by the much-loved Theodor Geisel, who is more widely known as Dr. Suess. The story was written as a condemnation of despotism and the fallacy of absolute power: "Yertle the Turtle King" was intended to parallel Adolf Hitler. Nearly fifty years after publication, it remains a favorite among the young and old alike. In 2001, Publishers Weekly listed it as number 125 of the best-selling children's books of all time. While the book itself holds three separate tales, it is best known for the first one, Yertle the Turtle. The other two stories are "Gertrude McFuzz" and "The Big Brag." All three stories are written in the trademark anapestic tetrameter fostered by Dr. Suess.
